Our Mission

Share our understanding of Earth history, processes and logic to help planning a more sustainable future.

  • Geo Logica aims to raise awareness of problematics behind over consumption and scarcity of natural resources while protecting and promoting social environmental sustainability.

The civilisational development achieved and quality of life we have today are the result of our understanding on how natural resources were formed and how can be used to build better living conditions for mankind. To keep developing while sustainably using Earth’s natural resources is crucial to understand the history of our planet, processes and evolution.

Earth’s history gives us insights on how our planet has evolved and also how it will develop in different future scenarios.

All of the Earth's greatest landscapes have a story behind, a geological history that tells us how our planet became the most amazing and unique place in the universe. Our understanding of the evolution of Planet Earth is crucial to address the most important challenges that the planet and mankind will face in the near future.

Without understanding the Earth’s past is impossible to plan a better future.

Geo Logica aims to bring geoscience knowledge to the forefront of the debate regarding the full understanding of past and current ongoing Earth processes. At the same time, address urgent issues related to natural resources and energy scarcity and sustainability, along side with environmental and social development.

Geo Logica cannot achieve these goals alone. Come with us discover a planet in constant change.

Came with us learn and help planning a better future for our planet and mankind.

    • Bring back people to nature in a sustainable and respectful away.

    • Elucidate our community about the history of our planet and its geological processes.

    • Help individuals, school, councils and institutions to discover, treasure, preserve and promote geo heritage.

    • Continue disseminating geosciences awareness and its importance to society.

    • Contribute to the social-environmental debate regarding natural resources and energy sustainability.

    • Continue to produce, support and promote academic research.

    • Developed peer-reviewed scientific publications related to the areas were we work.

    • Supported and promoted academic research.

    • Contributed to the dissemination of geosciences and acknowledgment of its social and environmental relevance.

    • Created geoscience media content to promote knowledge of our planet history and awareness of its importance in the planning of a more sustainable future for both planet and mankind.

Thank-you for an incredible experience in Portugal ! Geology, Culture, Food, People, amazing experience we will remember for many, many years ! Pedro you are the best ! Cheers to Diapirs !
— Steve Lindberg, University of Pittsburgh @ Johnstown Portugal Field Trip
Just returned from an incredible guided geology field trip with the incomparable Pedro of Geo Logica. My head is spinning a bit from ingesting 200 million years of Earth’s history in three days. It was mostly the Jurassic and Cretaceous, with some newer stuff too. This was an incredible birthday present.
— Benjamin Wechsler, Geo Tourism Field Trip
An amazing field trip organised by Pedro Barreto from Geo Logica.
Great geology, great group, great food, perfect organisation from start to end.
Thank you so much !!!!
— Sidonie Revillon, Salt Basins T.I.G. field trip participant
I was very fortunate to spend the last 5 days in Portugal, as part of Geo Logica ‘s first iteration of the “Salt Diapirism and Sediment Interaction” field course. Many thanks to Pedro Barreto, Ricardo Pereira, Prof. Ian Davison and all the other participants for the cool localities and the great discussions (and so. much. fantastic. food!)
— Heijn Van Gent, Salt Basins T.I.G. field trip participant.
A superbly organised geological and gastronomic experience. Spectacular exposures of diapirs and related features with a backdrop of the stunning west and south coasts of Portugal. A fantastic group of professionals for stimulating discussions. Hats off Geo Logica and highly recommended for anyone considering the second iteration!
— Toby Dawborn, Salt Basins T.I.G. field trip participant
Had a fantastic time with my grandchildren while discovering more about the amazing history of our planet. They loved to see and learn how the dinosaur footprints were preserved.

Pedro Barreto (Founder - Geologist - GeoCreator - Field Trip Leader)

Passionate about being in the nature since toddler, very early got lost in the fabulous meanders of Serra de Sintra, near Lisbon. During his childhood collected maps, rocks and fossils and loved climbing trees and boulders at his parents countryside village, where used to spend vacations.

At the age of 15, started climbing together with his middle brother. In a self-taught way, learned basic climbing techniques from equipment brochures bought with piggy bank money.

  • On the same year that finished the degree, following his love for scientific knowledge on how mountains are formed, headed to the United Kingdom, where enrolled a master of science program at Royal Holloway, University of London. Toured the United Kingdom pursuing all main natural geological cathedrals, where in the 18th century James Hutton, Charles Lyell, Charles Darwin and others established the foundations of geology as a science. After a year, in September 2004, completed his master's degree in Tectonics, with a thesis on the orogenic formation of the Zagros Mountains in Iran.

His life journey proceeded with an incursion into Maghreb, having traveled in the mountains of High Atlas, Middle Atlas and Rif. On April 2005, as a result of the work developed during the master's degree, was invited to work as a geologist for NPA Satellite Mapping, today CGG NPA, in which, for about a decade, prepared dozens of geological maps and reports over five continents.

From satellite images observed, studied and mapped on all continents, always keeping an eye on the diversity and history of Planet Earth. Having worked in the most diverse geographies and geological domains of the planet, had the privilege of carrying out fieldwork in the High Atlas and Anti Atlas in Morocco, High Plateau in Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Colombia, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Brazil and Portugal.

Between 2008 and 2013 traveled more than 15,000 km in East Africa, doing geological cartography. Between 2011 and 2012 was responsible for organising, planning, leading, reporting and publishing field geology guides in Tanzania. Having traveled extensively in this country, from Tanga on the northern border, to the Rovuma River on the southern border, from Dar es Salam in the east, to Lake Tanganyika in the west, from the feet of Kilimanjaro, in Arusha, to the deep immensity of Lake Nyasa, he is knowledgeable of places, cultures and history of unique beauty and completely “off the beaten track” in this incomparable region.

Worked with Partex Services Portugal between January 2014 and September 2020, while still part of Gulbenkian Foundation, as a senior geologist in the New Ventures and Exploration Department. During this period led geological research in Portugal, Algeria, Brazil and Angola.

Meanwhile, continued his explorations of European mountains, having climbed emblematic peaks in Chamonix Massif in the French Alps, French and Italian Pre-Alps, Dolomites (Italian Alps) and Gran Sasso Mountains in the Italian Apennines. Also made first accents on rock and winter climbing routes in Serra da Estrela (Portugal), one of his favourite places to reset.

Traveled to more than 40 countries, in 5 continents. Author and co-author of 20 scientific publications in internationally renowned scientific conferences and magazines, in the field of geosciences. Proud father, geologist, climber, mountaineer and adventurer, is currently developing his personal project, in the area of consultancy, communication, tourism, training and geological sustainability, called Geo Logica.
